UNIVERSITY OF HA’IL Ha’il, Saudi Arabia
English Language Centre Positions for EFL/ESOL Instructors (Male and Female)
Applicants must be speakers of English as their first language (or have native-equivalent competence), and have a degree in English or a degree in any discipline from an anglophone university, an internationally-recognised TESOL qualification and TESOL experience outside their home country.
We wish to recruit qualified, committed teachers of EFL/ESOL from 1 September 2010 to teach in the Preparatory-Year English Programme, a structured 20-hour-per-week pre-university intensive course in general and academic English. The Preparatory Year prepares students for English-medium studies leading to degrees in computer science, engineering, medicine and business administration.
The University of Ha’il has both male and female branches. There are currently about 60 male and 40 female teachers of English in the Preparatory-Year Programme.
QUALIFICATIONS A basic postgraduate qualification in TESOL (CELTA, Trinity College Cert.TESOL or equivalent) and teaching experience outside one’s home country are essential. Certificates gained from on-line or distance-learning courses are not acceptable. Higher TESOL qualifications (e.g. DELTA, Trinity College Dip.TESOL or M.A.) are preferred.
SALARIES Salaries depend on qualifications and length of relevant experience. Including cost-of-living and local transport allowances, teachers with a basic qualification will start between SR136,548 and SR201,132 per annum (US$36,410 - $53,630), while those with a relevant master’s degree will start between SR159,732 and SR235,000 per annum (US$42,600 - $62,670). Contracts are for two years and are renewable. An end-of service gratuity is paid of up to one month’s basic salary for each year of service.
All monetary benefits are tax-free and fully convertible.
UNIVERSITY YEAR The academic calendar consists of two semesters between September and June. In each there are 15 weeks of teaching followed by 2 weeks for final examinations.
WORKING HOURS The working week (40 hours) is from Saturday to Wednesday. Instructors teach 20 contact hours per week (normally 4 x 50 minutes per day), keep one office hour daily and participate in some administrative duties. Classes are held between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
ADDITIONAL REMUNERATION There are sometimes opportunities to earn additional income on short courses outside the university curriculum or for teaching beyond the normal workload. Instructors who teach during the summer session (eight weeks) are paid two months’ additional salary.
BENEFITS HOUSING: Every employee is provided rent-free with a fully-furnished housing unit appropriate to the family size. Services, including mains water, electricity and air-conditioning, are free, as are local phone calls, internet access and maintenance. Each unit has its own telephone and wireless internet connection. Alternatively, an employee can provide his own accommodation with a university housing allowance.
VACATIONS: Leave is determined by the academic calendar. In the current academic year, the Fall semester began on 3 October 2009 and ends on 10 February 2010. The Spring semester commences on 20 February 2010 and ends on 23 June. There are three holidays during the academic year: Eed Al-Fitr (10 - 25 September 2009), Eed Al-Adha (19 November - 4 December) and the inter-semester break (11 - 19 February 2010). There is also a short mid-semester break in the second semester (15 - 23 April). The summer vacation plus Eed Al-Fitr will be from 24 June to 17 September. Teachers are free to travel both within and out of the country during all holiday periods.
AIR FARES: An employee receives airline tickets for him/herself and up to three dependents to and from their point of origin at the beginning and end of service and annually for the summer vacation.
TRANSPORT is provided to and from work and from the University housing compound to local shops and supermarkets (two evenings and Thursday mornings).
E-MAIL AND INTERNET facilities are provided both at work and at home.
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION Ha’il lies 600 km north-west of the capital, Riyadh, connected by modern major roads and several daily bus services to Riyadh, Medina and Jedda. There are also daily air services to Riyadh, Jedda and Dammam.
The town stands on a plain 1,000 m above sea-level, bounded by a range of hills to the west. The University housing compound is on the edge of a national park within the hills, which is popular for picnics and camping.
