(Best Syndication News) Tensions have risen between the United States and Pakistan after it was learned that President George Bush signed a secret executive order in July giving Special Forces carte blanche power to cross into Pakistan to carry out raids against suspected terror sights. Pakistani soldiers manning a border checkpoint fired on a U.S. helicopter near the Afghan / Pakistan border. Department of Defense spokesperson Jim Garamone said that the OH-58 Kiowas helicopter did not intrude into Pakistan and was flying in “Afghan airspace.” No one was hurt and the helicopter was not hit, but some fear that this could lead to another US conflict in the region. The Pakistan Newspaper reports that the tensions are “heightened” as the U.S. steps up missile strikes and reports a possible raid into Pakistan earlier this month by special operations forces. Energy-poor Jordan has recently signed a series of agreements to develop nuclear power in a move to curb its dependence on imported fuel. The West Bank - known only as Judea and Samaria until 1950 - is indisputably the biblical heartland of the Jewish people. The purported offer by Israel’s Prime Minister -Ehud Olmert - to cede 93.5% of that area in fulfilment of President George Bush’s “two state solution” was therefore a very difficult and heart rending decision to make. Yet it has been rejected by the Palestinian Authority after five years of fruitless negotiations. Little useful purpose can now really be served in trying to analyse the reasons why these negotiations ended so ignominiously or who should be blamed for their failure. It is time to move on. |
